 SKOL Brewery Ltd (SBL), a subsidiary of Belgium-based UNIBRA, has entered into a partnership with Total Energies to adopt Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) within its brewery operations, signifying a strategic move towards sustainable practices.

The collaboration revolves around a comprehensive LPG supply contract, primarily addressing the needs of forklifts and boilers at the SKOL Brewery facility. 

This initiative is part of SKOL’s overarching commitment to curbing its environmental impact and embracing a greener, more sustainable manufacturing process.

In a statement, the company expressed, “A commitment aligned with Rwanda’s ambitious climate action agenda that features a 38% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions compared to business as usual by 2030, and a vision to be a climate-resilient and carbon-neutral economy by 2050.”

This proactive step not only aligns with future regulatory changes and environmental standards but also anticipates the eventual phase-out of Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) in favor of cleaner energy sources.

“The benefits extend beyond environmental impact, as the adoption of LPG for forklifts allows for indoor usage, enhanced consumption control, and other operational advantages. 

SKOL Brewery remains dedicated to driving positive change, fostering sustainability, and leading the way in responsible business practices within the community,” the statement emphasized.

In addition to this sustainable energy initiative, SKOL Brewery has introduced the first locally produced water in returnable glass bottles in the Rwandan market, showcasing its dedication to sustainability throughout its operations and value chain.

Earlier this year, the brewery collaborated with Orion Basketball Club in the ‘One Shot One Tree’ tree-planting campaign. Under this initiative, SKOL pledged to plant 50 trees every time the club scored a goal, amounting to planting of 6,000 trees during the campaign’s duration.

Eric Gilson, SBL GM, stated, “This partnership will greatly contribute to temperature control, climate resilience, clean air, water management, and various other ecological benefits, reducing carbon emissions and uplifting the well-being of Rwandan communities. This is in line with SBL’s strategic ambition on CSR and environment.”

SKOL Brewery remains committed to a sustainable business model that not only fosters development in Rwanda but also promotes responsible development and empowerment within the local community.

The company, with a portfolio including SKOL brand (Pulse, Malt, Lager, Gatanu, Panache) and Virunga, has been a significant player in the global beer market since its launch in Africa in 1965, with a presence in seven African countries.
