Poultry farmers in Nigeria have been advised to take advantage of modern research and technology in order to sustain the poultry business in the face of the global economic crisis.

The Acting President of the Poultry Farmers Association of Nigeria stated this at the Nigeria Poultry Show in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

In order to discuss the difficulties currently faced, poultry farmers from all over the nation gathered at the annual poultry show to also come up with solutions.

In addition to beef, poultry products are a significant source of protein in the nation. According to stakeholders, a new strategy is needed to maintain the poultry industry in the face of the current economic downturn.

They noted that the industry provides employment opportunities to more than 25 million people and lament the challenges confronting them such as, bird flu, flooding among others.

They called for more support from the federal government.

Some of the commissioners of Agriculture in attendance also shared their views on the situation and how to succeed in poultry business.

The Association’s acting National President stated that despite the difficulties they face, poultry farmers still have the chance to develop by utilising contemporary research and technology.

He also bemoaned the inefficient use of the nation’s land, noting that many hectares of land were purchased for agricultural use but are currently underutilized. After many years of operation, the University of Agriculture, for instance, has more than 10,000 hecters of land but has only used 2,000 of them.
