In response to allegations of discrimination against Nigerians, the Federal Competition and Consumer Commission,FCCPC, has recently taken strong action against a Chinese supermarket in Abuja. Following the controversial policy of limiting access to only Chinese nationals and prohibiting Nigerians from patronizing an establishment, a supermarket in Abuja’s general business district has come under fire.

FCCPC officials have launched an investigation into the incident, after a number of concerns from Nigerians on different social media platforms. It was discovered that the owner, Cindy Liu Bei, and her family had left the premises after questioning Nigerian working at the supermarket.

Boladale Adeyinka, the Commission’s Director for Surveillance and Investigation, oversaw the enforcement operation and emphasised the gravity of the allegations. According to the surveillance footage, the owner and her family left abruptly, leading FCCPC investigators to close the business on the basis of discriminatory conduct recorded.

Adeyinka underlined the importance of responsibility and compliance with regulations, noting that it would be necessary for the owner to appear before the FCCPC panel in order to answer these claims. If the proprietor fails to come forward, additional enforcement measures may be taken, such as an extended closure of the supermarket.

The FCCPC’s swift response demonstrates its commitment to the protection of consumer rights and combating discriminatory practices on the market. The closure of the supermarket is a reminder to all businesses in Nigeria that, regardless of nationality or ethnicity, they have an obligation to be inclusive and not discriminate against each other.

The FCCPC will continue to pursue the objective of providing all customers with fair and equal treatment while respecting the rule of law in Nigeria’s business environment as this investigation continues.
